Methodology review and training with the African Union IT staff

The review was conducted over three days between the five members of the African Union Democracy and Electoral assistance Unit (DEAU), EISA who give support to the AU Election Observation Missions, and Barbara Smith and Said Tahri of EODS.

The group reviewed the first few LTO missions, challenges and looked at practical ways to improve the functioning of long term AU EOMs. The election day reporting system was also reviewed to try to make the system more efficient and entering the observation findings into a database.

On the 10th October Mr Tahri worked with the AU IT person to examine the requirements for an observer roster and develop a shared electronic election calendar for the Unit.

The review assisted the AU in developing their training program for the coming year, improved LTO and STO TORs and guidelines for their deployment, and began to examine how a core team for EOMs might be developed over time. Following the review meeting the three institutions further developed AU EOM election day report forms and results database.
